Naperville Epoxy Flooring polishes concrete floors across Naperville. We look at your slab with you, talk through how much shine you want, and send you a written quote before any work starts.
What polished concrete is
The polished concrete we finish is your own concrete floor, ground smooth and then polished until it shines. We don't put a coat of epoxy on top of it. We start with coarse grinding pads to take off the top of the slab, then work up through finer and finer pads until the floor has the shine you picked.
Partway through, we spread a liquid hardener over the floor, let it soak into the concrete, and keep polishing.
Polished concrete or an epoxy coat
We polish concrete when you want the look of the slab itself, with its own color and marks. If you want a solid color, a speckled look or a pattern, we'd lay a coat instead. Our garage floor epoxy, flake epoxy floors and metallic epoxy floors pages cover those.
We check the slab before we quote, and we tell you if cracks, patches or old glue will show through the polish, and whether polishing still makes sense for your floor.
How we handle the grinding dust
OSHA says concrete contains crystalline silica. It says grinding concrete creates very small particles of it, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds. OSHA says workers who breathe those particles in are at higher risk of serious diseases, including lung cancer and silicosis, an incurable lung disease.
OSHA's silica rule for building work says a walk-behind floor grinder has to either feed water onto the cutting surface the whole time, or have the dust collection system its maker recommends. We tell you which way we'll grind your floor, and we vacuum up the loose dust between passes.
Keeping a shiny floor safe to walk on
OSHA says falls on the same level, on a working surface, are among the leading causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. Its rule for floors at work says the floor of each room where people work has to be kept clean and, as far as it can be, dry. So we ask where your floor gets wet before we pick how far to polish it.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- How much shine you're getting, and which areas get polished.
- Whether the floor will be ground wet or dry, and how the dust or wet mud will be handled.
- The name of each hardener, sealer or other product, and its safety data sheet.
- Whether crack repair and taking off old glue, tile or coating are in the price.
- Who moves the furniture, racks or stock.
- When people can walk on each area again.
Questions about polished concrete in Naperville
Can you polish an old garage or basement slab?
We can often polish an older slab, but we need to see it first. We look for cracks, stains and old coatings when we come out, and we tell you in your quote what has to be done before we polish.
Do you put wax on a polished floor?
We don't wax the floors we polish. The EPA says paints, varnishes and wax all contain organic solvents, and that these products can give off organic compounds while you use them and, to some degree, while they are stored.
What happens to the wet mud from grinding?
We grind some floors wet, and the water and concrete dust mix into a gray mud we call slurry. The City of Naperville says not to flush or pour paint, harsh chemicals and similar products down the drain, because its wastewater plant has a hard time treating them and they can end up in local waterways. So we pick up the slurry and never rinse it into a sink or floor drain.
Will road salt hurt a polished garage floor?
The City of Naperville says excess salt damages vehicles and harms pets and plants, and that too much salt also degrades local waterways. We suggest you hose or mop the salty slush off the floor through the winter, and we'll tell you which cleaner suits the sealer we used.
Can a business get safety data sheets for the products?
Yes, we can give you the safety data sheet for each product we use. OSHA says all employers with hazardous chemicals in the workplace must have labels and safety data sheets for the workers exposed to them, and train them to handle those chemicals.
Can you polish one part of a shop or warehouse at a time?
Yes, we can polish one section at a time so the rest of the building keeps running, and we put the order of the sections in your quote. For a coated floor with aisle lines instead, see our industrial and warehouse epoxy page.
Do I need a permit to polish a concrete floor in Naperville?
The City of Naperville's Guide to Building Permits says cosmetic work, such as painting, does not need a permit, but remodeling a basement does. For a question about your own project, the city says to call Building Permits at (630) 420-6100, Option 2.
How much does polished concrete cost?
We price your floor once we've seen the slab, and you get that quote in writing.
