What garage floor epoxy is
NIOSH, which is part of the CDC, says epoxies and resins are chemicals that can combine to form a hard, strong surface when they cure, or dry. It says they are often used in two-part glues or surface coatings. The epoxy we use on garage floors is mixed in your garage just before it goes down.
How we coat a garage floor
We start once the garage is empty. Then we check the concrete for cracks, oil spots and any old coating.
Next we grind the top of the concrete so the epoxy has a rough surface to grip. We fill the cracks, and if a crack needs more than a fill, our concrete crack repair page covers that work. Then we roll on the epoxy.
If you want a speckled look, we toss colored vinyl flakes onto the wet coat, as on our flake epoxy floors. We finish with a clear top coat, and we can make that top layer a polyaspartic floor coating instead. In plain terms, polyaspartic is the other liquid plastic coat we use besides epoxy.
Grinding dust
OSHA says concrete contains crystalline silica. It says grinding concrete creates very small particles of it, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds. Workers who breathe those particles in are at higher risk of serious diseases, OSHA says, including lung cancer and silicosis, an incurable lung disease.
So before we grind, we tell you how we'll keep the dust down and out of the house, and we ask you to keep kids and pets away from the garage while we work.
Fresh air on coating day
The EPA says that if a label says to use a product in a well-ventilated area, use it outdoors or where there is an exhaust fan, or else open windows to let in as much outdoor air as you can. We follow the label on each product we use, and we keep the door from the garage into the house shut while the coat goes down.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The name of each product, and how many coats.
- How the concrete will be ground, and how the dust will be handled.
- Whether crack repair is in the price.
- Whether taking off any old coating is in the price.
- Whether flakes and a top coat are included.
- When you can walk on the floor, and when you can park on it.
Questions about garage floor epoxy in Naperville
Is it safe to do the epoxy myself?
NIOSH says to review the safety instructions before you use epoxies and resins. It says gloves have to be the right materials or they may not protect you, and to wear safety glasses or goggles if there is any chance of a splash. If you are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, it says to avoid mixing epoxies and resins yourself and to ask someone else to mix them.
Can I go by the smell to know the air is safe?
NIOSH says harmful levels of chemicals cannot always be smelled, and some much less hazardous chemicals have an odor. It says to follow the safety instructions on the label or safety data sheet. We'll tell you when it's fine to come back into the garage.
Should old paint cans go back on the new floor?
The EPA says gases can leak even from closed containers, so safely throwing out old, partly full cans you don't need could help lower the chemical levels in your home. It says to keep what you do keep in a well-ventilated place, out of reach of children.
Can you coat a floor that has oil stains?
We look at oil spots when we visit, and we tell you what we'll do about them before we quote.
Can you coat over an old garage floor coating?
We check how well the old coat is stuck down first. If it is peeling, we grind it off, and our epoxy floor repair page covers fixing a coating that has only failed in spots.
How much does garage floor epoxy cost?
We price your garage floor once we've seen it, and you get that quote in writing.
Can you add storage once the floor is done?
Yes, we can fit garage cabinets and garage overhead storage once the floor is ready.
