Epoxy floors in Naperville

Naperville Epoxy Flooring puts hard-wearing coatings on concrete floors. We do garages, and we also coat basements, shops, kitchens and warehouse floors. Once a garage floor is done, we can fit garage cabinets and garage overhead storage racks too. We work across Naperville and in nearby towns such as Lisle, Warrenville and Bolingbrook.

We start by coming to see the floor. We look over the concrete for cracks, oil stains and old coatings, ask what the space is for, and go through the coating choices with you. Then we write you a quote.

Garage floors

Garage floor epoxy

For garage floor epoxy, we grind the concrete so the coating can grip, fill the cracks, then put down the coats.

Flake epoxy floors

On flake epoxy floors, we scatter colored vinyl chips across the wet coat, then seal over them. We suggest flake for owners who want a floor that doesn't show every speck of dust.

Polyaspartic floor coatings

We also put down polyaspartic floor coatings. In plain terms, polyaspartic is the other liquid plastic coat we use besides epoxy. We roll it on after grinding, just like epoxy, either on its own or as the top layer over an epoxy coat. Ask us to compare the two for your garage.

Getting the garage ready

Before the day we start, we'll ask you to clear the garage floor, and we'll go over where the cars, bikes and tools can go for the length of the job. We'll also check where the dust from grinding will go and which doors we'll keep shut. If you store paint or fuel in the garage, tell us at the first visit.

Fumes and skin contact on coating day

On the day we coat, think about the air in your garage. NIOSH, a federal research agency that studies worker safety and health, says epoxies and resins are often used in two-part glues or surface coatings. It says some of their parts can be hazardous before they cure (dry), and that cured epoxies are usually safer to handle. Its advice is to increase ventilation as much as possible. It also warns that smelling or not smelling a chemical is not a good sign of whether you are safe.

Ask whether any coat in your quote is polyurethane. OSHA, the federal workplace safety agency, lists polyurethane paints and surface coatings among polyurethane products, and says isocyanates, a group of chemicals, are the raw materials that make up all of them. It lists skin irritation, chest tightness and difficult breathing among the health effects of isocyanate exposure.

So while we work, keep the door from the garage into the house shut, keep kids and pets away, and stay off the floor until we tell you it's ready.

Inside the house

Garages aren't the only floors we coat.

Basement epoxy floors

We coat basement epoxy floors for rec rooms, laundry rooms and storage areas. Before we quote, we check the slab for damp.

Metallic epoxy floors

For metallic epoxy floors, we work in pigments that swirl as the coat goes down, so each floor comes out a little different. We do them in basements and showrooms.

Polished concrete

If you'd rather keep the bare concrete, we do polished concrete: we grind the surface smooth in stages, then seal it.

Business floors

We do commercial epoxy flooring for shops and offices, industrial and warehouse epoxy for heavy traffic, and restaurant and kitchen epoxy for kitchens and food areas.

Repairs

Concrete crack repair

We do concrete crack repair on its own or as the first step before a coating.

Epoxy floor repair

If an older coating is peeling or chipped, we do epoxy floor repair. We'll tell you whether a patch will do or the old coat has to come off.

Outdoor concrete

Outside, we coat patios and the concrete around pools with patio and pool deck coatings.

What to get in writing

The City of Naperville's guide to building permits has tips on choosing a contractor. It says to get at least three bids, never to pay for a project in advance, and to make sure the contractor is bonded and insured. On top of that, ask for these on paper:

  • The name of each coating, and how many coats.
  • How the concrete will be prepared, and whether crack repair is included.
  • What happens if the slab turns out to be damp.
  • Whether moving things out of the garage is part of the price.

Questions about epoxy floors in Naperville

Do I need a permit for an epoxy garage floor in Naperville?

The city's guide says cosmetic improvements, such as painting, wallpapering, carpeting and trim work, don't need permits. It says remodeling, including basements, does. If you're not sure where your floor coating falls, the guide says to call Building Permits on (630) 420-6100, Option 2.

Can you coat over an old epoxy floor?

It depends on the old coat. If it's well stuck down, we may be able to prepare it and coat over it. If it's peeling, we take it off first.

Will the coating hide cracks in my garage floor?

We fill the cracks we find before any coating goes on. If we think a wide or moving crack will still show through, we'll tell you at the first visit.

Can you coat a basement floor that gets damp?

We test the slab first. If it's damp, we'll tell you what would need to happen before we coat it, or whether we'd hold off.

Which towns do you cover?

We cover all of Naperville, plus nearby towns such as Lisle, Bolingbrook, Aurora, Wheaton, Downers Grove and Plainfield.
