What we coat outside
We coat concrete patios, pool decks, porches and the paths around them. Outdoor concrete sits in sun, rain and snow, so we pick a coating made for outdoor use, and we tell you its name before we start.
On pool decks, we mix a fine grit into the top coat so wet feet get more grip. We can also toss colored vinyl flakes onto the wet coat for a speckled look, as on our flake epoxy floors.
What goes into a coating
NIOSH, which is part of the CDC, says epoxies and resins are chemicals that can combine to form a hard, strong surface when they cure, or dry. It says they are often used in two-part glues or surface coatings. The coatings we use are mixed on site just before they go down, and spread while they are still wet.
How we coat a patio or pool deck
First we clean the concrete and check it for loose patches and cracks. If a crack needs more than a fill, our concrete crack repair page covers that work. Then we grind the top of the concrete so the coating has a rough surface to grip.
When the dust is cleared away, we roll on the base coat, add flakes or grit if you want them, and finish with a clear top coat.
Grinding dust outside
OSHA says concrete contains crystalline silica. It says grinding concrete creates very small particles of it, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds. OSHA says workers who breathe those particles in are at higher risk of serious diseases, including lung cancer and silicosis, an incurable lung disease.
OSHA's silica rule for building work says a hand grinder can use a steady feed of water on the spot being ground, but only for work done outdoors, or else a cover around the wheel with a dust collection system. We use one of those two ways on every patio, and we ask you to keep kids and pets inside while we grind.
Keeping the mess out of storm drains
The EPA says storm drains drain directly to lakes, streams, rivers and wetlands. It says to dispose of paints and other household chemicals properly, not in storm sewers or drains. We grind some patios wet, and the water and concrete dust mix into a gray mud we call slurry. So we pick up the slurry, and we never wash it or leftover coating into the street or a drain.
Salt and winter
The EPA says road salt can damage private and public property. The City of Naperville says excess salt damages vehicles and harms pets and plants, and that too much salt also degrades local waterways. We tell you which ice melt and which cleaner suit the top coat we put down.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The name of each product, and how many coats.
- Whether grit for grip is mixed into the top coat.
- Whether crack repair is in the price.
- How the concrete will be ground, and how the dust and slurry will be handled.
- Whether flakes and a top coat are included.
- When you can walk on the coating, and when you can put furniture back.
Questions about patio and pool deck coatings in Naperville
Do I need a permit to coat my patio in Naperville?
The City of Naperville's Guide to Building Permits says cosmetic work, such as painting, does not need a permit. It does list putting in a patio that brings the total patio area to more than 500 square feet, and putting in a swimming pool or spa more than 24 inches deep, as projects that need one. For a question about your own project, the city says to call Building Permits at (630) 420-6100, Option 2.
Does my homeowners association have a say?
The City of Naperville's permit guide says residents should also contact their homeowners association for other rules. We're happy to wait while you get the color or finish approved.
Can I coat my patio myself?
NIOSH says that if you are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, you should avoid mixing epoxies and resins yourself. It also says to wash your skin as soon as you can if these chemicals get on it. We mix and spread every coat ourselves, wearing gloves.
What should I do with leftover coating from an old project?
The Illinois EPA says one of its long-term household hazardous waste drop-off sites is in Naperville. It says its collections take items such as paints and thinners, but business wastes are not accepted. We take our own leftover coating with us when we leave.
Can you coat over an old painted or coated patio?
We check what is on the concrete when we visit. If the old coat is loose or peeling, we grind it off before we start, and we put that work in the quote.
Can you fix cracks before you coat?
Yes, we can fill most cracks before the coating goes down. If a crack is wide or one side sits higher than the other, we tell you before we quote.
How much does a patio or pool deck coating cost?
We price your patio or pool deck once we've seen it, and you get that quote in writing.
